Caverion to implement a traffic monitoring system on Ring Road III between the Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä motorways in Finland
Caverion has signed a contract with YIT for implementing a traffic monitoring system on Ring Road III (Kehä III) between the Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä motorways and from Ring Road III to Rita junction in Porvoo. The contract value is approximately EUR 2.5 million.
The new traffic monitoring system will cover approximately 40 kilometres and combine the current telematics systems into one system on Highway E18. On the completion of the construction, all traffic lights between Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä will have been removed. For interchange signs, a four-metre high full matrix message board will be installed above the road.
The upgrade of Ring Road III between the Lahdenväylä and Porvoonväylä motorways has commenced and it is estimated to be completed in 2016. YIT will implement the upgrade construction, the total value of which is over EUR 42 million. In addition to the upgrade of the existing road, the contract includes the delivery and testing of the telematics hardware for the traffic monitoring system as well as the construction of multi-level interchanges and ramps leading from Länsimäentie in Vantaa onto Motorway 7 towards Helsinki.
Caverion is currently implementing a traffic monitoring system on Highway E18 under construction between Koskenkylä and Kotka as well as some parts between Porvoo and Koskenkylä. The company has implemented telematics systems before on Ring Road I in areas around Mestarintunneli tunnel in Leppävaara, Espoo, and for covering Highway 3 in Hämeenlinna.
Ring Road III is one of Finland’s most heavily used roads. The upgrade project will improve traffic flow and minimise congestion on a road where the volume of traffic is expected to increase dramatically.
